Chandigarh, September 29: In a significant decision to provide a major relief to the economically weaker sections of the society, the Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Wednesday announced to waive off the entire outstanding default amount of domestic electricity bills up to 2 KW load.
Acceding to the long pending demand of people whose electricity connections were disconnected due to non-payment of bills, the Cabinet has taken this pro-poor decision by which the Punjab Government will now pay the amount of their arrears due towards such individual defaulters.
This decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, here at CMO, this morning.
During the deliberations, the Chief Minister also emphasized the need to rationalize the cost of production of electricity in Punjab besides popularizing the concept of greenfield solar projects as these are more environmentally friendly and affordable as compared to conventional thermal power plants. He also underlined the need to review the power purchase agreements executed amongst the various private power plants and PSPCL for power generation in the state from the point of view of its financial viability and economic sustainability.
